There is a big misconception people have over pests and the need for pest control…
Roaches are mostly considered to be gross critters, but here at 5 very interesting Cockroach Facts that might make you think twice.
Roaches can still live with their head cut off
Have you ever tried killing a cockroach and noticed how the body still managed to wiggle without the head? This is because cockroaches are capable of living for weeks without their heads. The reason for this is because Cockroaches do not have blood pressure the way humans do, they also do not have a huge network of blood vessels like that of humans, roaches do not have capillaries that need the pressure to be able to flow blood trough. Cockroaches have an open circulatory system in which there is less pressure. Cockroaches breathe through their little holes in each of their body segments and are not dependent on their head for respiratory purposes, the only reason why a roach eventually dies is due to lack of food and water because, without their mouths, they aren’t able to ingest food.
Roaches can eat anything
Cockroaches aren’t fussy eaters; they can eat almost anything. Cockroaches are omnivorous scavengers and they can eat any organic food available to them. Cockroaches are known to prefer sweets, meat, and starches, they are also known to consume other items such as hair, books, and any other decaying matter. Cockroaches which stay in sewers feed on sewage while the ones which live on dead wood consume decaying wood, amongst that, Some other things which cockroaches love to eat are potatoes, bread, pasta, soft leather, sugary foods, and meat. Another funny fact is that; cockroaches enjoy pet food because pet food is rich in different nutrients and minerals.
Cockroaches Multiply fast
1 cockroach can become 40 cockroaches if not dealt with on-time. Roaches produce an egg sac, called an ootheca, the sac holds a lot of eggs. The ootheca is basically a protective case, it is also a protein layer that hardens to become a protective case for the eggs inside. Roaches can produce more than 10 nymphs per case and up to 20 cases a lifetime. In order for cockroaches to see the gestation period until the end, they need temperatures around 80 degrees. Female Cockroaches are known to be able to store sperm for long periods after mating and can reproduce more than once from stored sperm, the average amount of time it takes for an egg to hatch is 38-103 days depending on the species.
Cockroaches can survive up to 30 minutes underwater
Cockroaches have an ability to hold their breath for more than 30 minutes in tap cold water, yeap, they can crawl up from the toilet if you try flushing them. The reason why roaches can survive inside water is that they don’t use their mouths to breathe, roaches breath through their bodies, using small openings located in their thorax, these breathing holes are called spiracles, when a roach is breathing, the oxygen travels throughout a system of tracheal tubes and is transported to all parts of the body. Cockroaches can however not survive long in warm water due to the temperature.
They are edible
Why kill it if you can eat it right? It is said that in China, cockroaches are deep fried and sold on sticks, there are also a number of tribes that eat cockroaches. It’s believed that cockroaches which are for edible purposes are put on a strict diet of Vegetables and other food types considered to be healthy. Although doctors still warn against the eating of roaches, some cultures do.
