Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a comprehensive approach to managing pests that combines different pest control strategies to minimize the use of pesticides while still effectively controlling pests. The aim of IPM is to protect crops, livestock, and other assets from pests in a way that is economically and environmentally sustainable.

- Prevention: Preventing pests from becoming established in the first place through good agricultural practices such as crop rotation, sanitation, and pest-resistant plant varieties.
- Monitoring: Regularly monitoring crops and other assets to detect pest populations early and assess the extent of the problem.
- Identification: Accurately identifying the pest species and understanding its life cycle, behaviour, and vulnerabilities.
- Action thresholds: Determining the level of pest activity that requires action, taking into account factors such as the type of pest, the crop or asset being protected, and economic considerations.
- Control strategies: Using a range of control strategies, such as biological control, cultural control, physical control, and chemical control, to reduce pest populations to an acceptable level.
- Evaluation: Evaluating the effectiveness of the control measures used and adjusting the approach as necessary.
IPM emphasizes the use of non-chemical methods of pest control whenever possible and minimizes the use of pesticides to reduce the risk of harmful effects on human health and the environment.
